i haven't done any research on this and i doubt i will anytime soon, but the idea of such gruesome men, so fierce and all warrior-like can be so noble to uphold the unwritten laws when it comes to the way they show respect to a beaten enemy. this is of course to let them die in honour and all that bull.
personally, i find that idea very intriguing yet appealing at the same time. i also wonder if it was truly that way back in the days... If it was, then i have one question... whoever can give me a good answer will get a SUGUS from me.
Why in the modern war, don't we see such honour being shown towards those that we have defeated? Why do we spit on them, sexually abuse them, treat them worse than we would an animal?
Where has the nobility of it all gone?
Isn't it bad enought that people are going into war to fuel the ambitions of one oaf; at the expense of millions of innocent victims, at the expense of the people's tax money? now they can't even pretend to be more humane than those evil tyrants of the past (think Hitler) towards their captives of war... all the talk about how backwards people from third world countries are, now take a good look at yourselves all you who supported the war. look at how many people that had been lost. all for a cause that only two men really know.

movies, being movies... they often sensationalise certain ideals and it is likely back in the days of Achilles, they never were so noble as to respect their fallen enemy. That way, it is easier to understand why the ill-treatement of the prisoners of war is happening. Can't be possible that we are turning back time and behaving like the cavemens do, now can we?
